Recruitment activity declines

Recruitment activity increased slightly between November and December, but was down compared to the previous year, according to Jobs & Skills.

Around 44% of employers were recruiting last month, three percentage points lower than at the end of 2023.

The biggest decline was outside the capital cities, where recruitment activity fell by seven percentage points to 46%. In the capital cities, around 42% of employers were recruiting but that was two percentage points lower than in 2023.

These trends reflect a broader shift in the market, with a year-long decline in internet job vacancies and slower employment growth in recent months, according to Jobs & Skills.
